The Wilkins House,1949. Richard Neutra, Architect. This masterpiece in the history of modern architecture was Neutra's opportunity to realize the unbuilt Case Study House #13, the Alpha House from 1947. On an oversized flag lot that spans three-quarters of an acre in bucolic South Pasadena, its mid-century elements epitomize Neutras Modernism with deep, covered terrazzo terraces and enormous plate glass doors that slide open to blur the relationship between indoors and out. Painstakingly restored to Neutras original plan by the owners and architect John Bertram, this 3bd/3bth home with 2 bd/2bth detached guest house sits at the end of a long, private drive. It features details such as redwood tongue-and-groove ceilings, radiant heating below terrazzo, cork floors, large pool and park-like sprawling flat lawns. Complete with a unique ventilation strategy in the living room and master bedroom with hinged birch panels below a row of aluminum casement windows.
