The very heart of this house is a love story. A love story of an architect to his wife. A love story of a family embraced by a home for nearly six decades. And a love story of place, and the community of Piedmont. Built in 1907 by famed architect Samuel Newsom for his wife Ella, their love story was tragically cut short by his sudden death, though she continued to live in the house for many years. Forty-One Lake was featured in the book Cottages & Castles, the author writes, “For his own home the noted architect designed a rambling two-story shingled house with two chimneys and unusual cave-cut dormers.†A sketch of the completed house was featured in the Oakland Tribune on December 15, 2017, titled “The Newsom cottage in Piedmont".
